Dampak Kerjasama Merida Initiative Terhadap Penanggulangan Peredaran Narkoba di Meksiko Tahun 2007-2012

Abstract

This study focuses on the impact of the Merida Initiative cooperationagainst drug trafficking eradication in Mexico in 2007-2012. The activityof Drugs Trans Organizations (DTOs) in the U.S. and Mexico have causednegative impacts on both countries. Mexico’s DTOs are major supplier ofcocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, and marijuana into U.S. territory. Thecompetition between DTOs in the race for the distribution area in Mexicohas caused thousands of deaths each year. This common problem eventuallybecame cooperation between U.S. and Mexican governments, which iscalled Merida Initiative. This study found that the Merida Initiative cooperationof U.S. and Mexico in 2007-2012 had a positive impact on the eradicationof drug trafficking in Mexico. Through Merida Initiative programs,the U.S. government has provided assistance over U.S. $ 2 billion in theform of equipment, weapons, training and the sharing of technology andinformation to the government of Mexico which is very helpful in destroyingDTOs and the improvement of the legal system in Mexico.
