Abstract


This classroom action research was aimed at explaining whether the use ofcooperative learning method type group project can better improve the level of students'ability in writing an essay. The researcher who was helped by a collaborator useObservation Sheets and Field-notes as the instruments of the research. Besides she alsoused writing test to see the improvement of students' writing ability on each cycle. Theresearch started on October 2007 and end on January 2008. This action research wasconducted at English Study Progam of FKIP UNRI. The participants of the researchwere the third semester students class A academic year 2007-2008. At the beginning ofcycle 1 the average score of the students writing ability was 50.5. At the end of cycle 1improved to 58.4, and at the end of cycle 2 improved to 75.6. Based on the findings,it was concluded that the use of cooperative learning method type group project canbetter improve the level of students' ability in writing an essay, therefore, theresearcher should continue using this technique in teaching writing
