Abstract


Problems that the researcher found in teaching reading skill subject are low ability of students incomprehending the text, less motivation to read English text, limited vocabularry. Students read only academic textmaterial in reading skill subjects. There are some factors that cause these problems.One of them is less actractive readingmaterial. In this action research the researcher wants to create, and compile the reading material for the aim that thesecreative and inovative reading materials are able to improve students reading comprehension skill and their motivationin reading. The sources of these reading materials are modern literary text.The type of modern literary texts selected by researcher are plays ( drama) with three up to seven scenes longand short stories with two up to thrity pages long. The Themes of these texts are dealing with social dislocation,, lifestruggle ,adventure, prejudice, friendship, and crime. These selelcted texts were divided into six groups ofmaterials for six meetings. In every meeting the students selected one interested theme. The result of selectionshowed that they were mose interested in topics such as ; The Glass Menagerrie”By Tenneessee Williams, Of Miceand Man by John Steibeck dan A street Car Named Desired by Tenneessee Williams. In addition, three topics of shortstory tests chosent by students are On the Rainy River by Tim O’ Brien, Miss Brill by Katherine Mansfield , dan TheMan in the Black Suit by Stephen King.The action was done in two cycles with three meeting for each cycle and one literary text for each meeting.Thre result of this research showed that; 1)students are more intrested in reading literary text with themes socialdislocation,, life struggle ,adventure, friendship. 2) Modern literary text was able to increase students readingcomprehension. The avegare of students achievment before doing action were 64.2 , average of students score aftercycle one were 71.2 and after cycle two is 76.8. In conclusion, the increase of students reading comprehension were12.4. 3) The result of the data analysis was found that students were more activies in teaching learning proses.
