Abstract


This classroom action research was carried out to increase students' ability incomprehending English Phonology II through the application of Jigsaw strategy. Thesubjects were the forth semester students taking English phonology II. A pre-test wasadministered before the treatment and a post-test was held after the treatment. Theprocedures of applying Jigsaw are: 1. Establish heterogeneous base groups of fivestudents each.2. Each student is given a copy of a complete materials, and each ofthem is assigned certain subtopic/s for his/her individual responsibility. 3. Each memberof the groups reads available materials individually. 4. The expert groups get together tocompare notes and talk about the information they have gathered. 5. Students return totheir base groups and take turns giving the presentations. 6. All students are given quizcovering all the topics After the first cycle, there was an increase of the mean scorefrom the pre-test (45.5) to (57.16). This didn’t fulfill the standard competency applied (≥70) yet. The result of observation also showed that the students' activity, in followingJigsaw procedures is 63%. The mean score of post-test at the second cycle (71.33) andthe result of observation (74.3%) fulfilled the competency proposed. In addition, t-testwas also used to see the effectiveness of Jigsaw strategy. The result showed that the 't'observed value (10.25) is greater than the ‘t' table value at the level of 0.05 (2.064)and 0.01 (2.797). This indicates that Jigsaw strategy is effective in increasing the students’ability in comprehending English Phonology II
